Just in time before the chill of autumn, a new collection of kantha sari baby blankets has arrived at Tulsi Crafts. Wonderfully soft and warm, these blankets have been used by mothers in Bengal for centuries.
They also make a lovely gift for a baby shower.
Vintage saris are given a second life with these kantha blankets. By hand six layers of sari fabric are stitched together by hand with a kantha (running) stitch. The front and back of the blanket are made from different saris. Each sari blanket is one of a kind.
The blankets are made in Bengal, India, by an organisation providing fair work to women. The women who make our baby blankets work on one blanket for approximately two days. They receive a living wage for their work, that is much higher than the minimum wage.
Our kantha products are made by women who have been victims of human trafficking. By offering them dignified work they are able to rebuild their lives. For Tulsi Crafts they make kantha sari blankets & plaids and scarves. Take a look here.
